Established in 2006, the Climate Change Unit consists of a small but dedicated team committed to providing a long-term response to the twin challenges of climate change and development. It is widely accepted that developing countries and in particular least developed countries (LDCs) like Cambodia will be hardest hit by the impacts of climate change. Consequently, there is an urgent need to facilitate appropriate action to combat these impacts and reduce the vulnerability of those most affected.
The CCU exists to address this need. This is done by focusing on three key objectives:
- Raise awareness about climate change and its impacts
- Assist stakeholders in taking concrete steps to reduce GHG emissions
- Encourage carbon offsetting through credible projects that achieve emissions reductions and contribute to poverty alleviation
These objectives are realized through developing related activities and targets. The principal activities involve:
- Conducting climate change education campaigns
- Developing high quality solutions for project developers (methodology and verification)
- Managing not-for-profit deal structuring services
- Assisting local businesses achieve carbon neutrality
A lot has been achieved in a short space of time and the unit has already produced encouraging results. Most notably in:
- Establishing a reputation as a market leader in securing carbon finance solutions for biomass projects
- Securing support from the World Bank to develop as a regional tool to improve access to carbon finance
- Developing a range of educational tools and seminars to promote awareness in Cambodia
- Winning a contract to develop a carbon neutrality label for the hospitality industry
- Attracting high profile media coverage
The CCU operates in rapidly evolving market sectors. As the world realizes both the dangers and opportunities presented by climate change the CCU will be at the forefront of efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and promote sustainable development in Southeast Asia.
